NOT-SO BREAKING NEWS: Trotter Sacks Babin

November 4, 2012

Earlier this week, Eagles’ Defensive End Jason Babin lashed out at fans for ‘vile’ chants during last week’s home loss to the Lions. Why didn’t we mention it? Honestly… we didn’t care.

Well, that’s not entirely true. When we first read Babin’s comments, we were definitely angry. As we mentioned last year around this time, when Casey Fredo Matthews took offense to the intense passion of Eagles fans, players who don’t understand what this team means to us need to keep their mouth’s shut. Don’t take your frustrations out on us. Don’t show us that we’re under your skin. And don’t EVER tell us what we can and cannot say about OUR football team. You are paid by an organization that exists for the sole purpose of us, the fans(*). You are a mercenary; just a body filling laundry we support monetarily and emotionally. Know your role.

(*)And, admittedly, The Billionaire’s bottom line.

But, why run off another angry, vile-filled rant at a schmuck like Jason Babin, when a former All-Pro Linebacker and fan favorite like Jeremiah Trotter can do it for us! Take it away, Trot (via 97.5 The Fanatic):

“Dude, get a grip, this is football. You’re a man. Why are you worried about what people say anyway? I understand that players have feelings, but you’re a man. You’re playing a gladiator sport, and you’re running around worried about what fans are talking about? Even if I did feel a certain way you would never hear me say it because number one, you are showing your weakness right there. You’re playing a gladiator sport, dude. Go play ball.

“When I hear some of this talk man it really, really pisses me off, because you’re focused on the wrong thing. You should be focusing this week on the Saints, not focusing on what the fans are saying, or putting things on Twitter saying this or that. Come on, dude. Go out and win some games. Let the fans do what they’re gonna do. Fans are still going to be fans, and they have every right to boo you if you don’t go out and put a good product on the field.”

Fuck, we miss having this guy on our Defense. And Babin NEEDS to listen to him.

Trotter, who along with Brian Dawkins and Hugh Douglas, made up the heart and soul of the Andy Reid Jim Johnson-era Eagles, knows what he’s talking about. He embraced Eagles fans from the moment he came to Philadelphia and forged a deep relationship with us. He understands why we’re so passionate and dedicated and (maybe sometimes) scarily obsessed with our football team.

On top of that, it pleases us to no end how he basically calls Babin out for being a pussy! “You’re playing a gladiator sport, dude,” is one of the greatest quotes, EVER! And it’s perfectly fitting for Babin.

Quick story: This past St. Patrick’s Day, we were at the same pub as Jason Babin, who was there with a group of his friends. They looked eerily similar to the crew that Hansel hung out with in Zoolander! Besides his oddball entourage though, there were three things we noted about Babin:

  1. He’s extremely small for a professional athlete. Sure, his arms are enormous and tatted up, but he’s really short and just looks like he lifts a lot. If you didn’t know who he was, you’d never think he was a football player. Incidentally, we didn’t see one person approach him for an autograph.
  2. He’s a total “bro.” You know, like a douche-y, fratguy bro(**). Like an “I’m-wearing-flip-flops-in-March” type of bro. Yes, he was wearing flip-flops.
  3. He seems like he doesn’t give a shit. Maybe it was the very Hansel-esque group he was with, or the fact that it was St. Patrick’s Day, but he seemed like he couldn’t care less about anything. Which makes sense when you read/hear his interviews or watch him play.

(**)Yes offense, douche-y, fratguy bros.

So, a huge Walrus-sized thank you to Trot for sticking up for Eagles fans and warrior-like football players, alike. We’ll always love number 54!

Greetings Fire The Walrus Nation! We hope you are all safe and dry following Hurricane SAndy.

Today’s usual programming – Whisker Wednesday – will be interrupted. (*)Check out Ray’s piece. Great, as always!
Keep an eye out over the next few days, as we will be bringing you a special series of posts.
Until then though, check us out tomorrow night (Thursday, November 1) LIVE on Danger-Radio! Happy Halloween! And if anyone is brave enough to dress up like our favorite Walrus, please send pictures to firethewalrus@gmail.com!
UPDATE: Listen to last night’s Danger-Radio episode here(*) – it will also be available on iTunes in a few days – our interview starts about 10 minutes in, where we discuss the majesty of the Vet, Lurie’s bottom line, Andy’s stubbornness, why we take the Eagles so personally and Mormon leaders(**). Big thanks to TR, Greg and sit-in guest Damon for a fun time and some free publicity!
(*) Just an FYI, Danger-Radio is not a sports show and is not safe for anyone under whatever age cursing and sexually-explicit material is frowned upon.
(**) Once again – and we can’t stress this enough – politics and religion have nothing to do with this site and won’t ever be discussed here… Not Andy’s, not ours, not yours. We’re all here for one common reason: We are Eagles fans. And we’re united under Kelly Green and the hatred of Andy Reid, no matter what our race, ethnicity or creed. Hey, that rhymed!

The 2012 Eagles Magical Mystery Coaching Tour

October 30, 2012

Episode One: Return of the Jedi? No Thanks.

As the premier voice of getting rid of Andy Reid, we are often asked who we want to replace The Walrus as the next Head Coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. Frankly… we don’t know.

But, now that we’re officially on Walrus Firing-watch, the time has come to figure out exactly who will be cleaning the crumbs and mustache whiskers out of Andy’s old water tank office.

Now, before we start, let’s be real: we can only pontificate so much. We (obviously) won’t have access to candidate interviews and don’t have the ability to ask aspiring coaches their plans to move this franchise forward. So, take whatever we say as pure opinion and speculation(*).

(*)You know… Like always.

With that being said, let’s take a quick look at the qualities and philosophies we’d like to see in the next leader of the Philadelphia Eagles. After a decade and a half of Reid’s “Offensive Genius,” it’s finally time for the Birds to go the Defensive route. Sure, the NFL is a passing league, but when rookies like Brandon Weeden can come right into the league and throw for 4,000+ yards, it’s the league’s elite Defenses that make the biggest difference. If you look at the last four Super Bowl winners – the Giants twice, the Packers and Saints – they all won with elite Quarterbacks and high-volume Offenses, sure, but their Defenses were also among the top-10 in the league for their respective seasons and they all excelled at creating pressure and forcing turnovers. That’s a far cry from this current Eagles team.

The next coach needs to be defensive-minded, and we would certainly prefer a mad scientist-type, who will create crazy schemes (alá Buddy Ryan’s 46, or even move the team to a 3-4 or 4-4 base Defense) and has a philosophy that predicates tough, hard-nosed, tenacious Defense.

Think about some of the greatest coaches in NFL history – Chuck Noll, Hank Stram, Tom Landry, George Halas, Bill Parcells and more recently Bill Belichick. All Defensive geniuses. And all of the best Defensive Coordinators that “great” Head Coaches owe their legacies to – Buddy Ryan, Dick LeBeau, Jim Johnson, Monte Kiffin. We NEED a Defensive guru.

We want a tough, stern, disciplinarian coach, whose team will adopt that mentality through osmosis. Think about how Jim Harbaugh came into San Francisco and instantly transformed the team’s demeanor, personality and culture. The Eagles desperately lack discipline and accountability, and need to have a leader that will instill that in the franchise.

Much like Andy’s need for a top-notch Defensive mind to complement his (once-potent) Offense, we are fine with the Offense being run by an established coordinator. Either way, both sides of the ball need to be totally overhauled and re-built from the lines out(**).

(**)Ironically, building from the lines out was Andy’s philosophy… And it worked! Until he completely wavered from it and starting plugging the lines with undrafted rookies and journeymen.

With that being said, there are four different categories to draw potential replacements from: current NFL Head Coaches, former NFL Head Coaches, current NFL assistant coaches, and college coaches.

Let’s start with the most obvious group: former NFL coaches.

Whenever we get into a discussion about the next Eagles coach, an uninformed fan will inevitably bring up Jon Gruden and Bill Cowher. Let’s be perfectly clear… We DO NOT want Jon Gruden or Bill Cowher or any other “retired” Head Coach to lead the Eagles.

Sure, Gruden and Cowher and Dungy and Parcells and Brian Billick and whoever else were once successful, Super Bowl-winning Head Coaches… But they would be better suited to takeover a team that is one piece away from winning it all. In other words, they would have been perfect fits for the Eagles in 2007-2008. This team needs a complete overhaul and rebuild, not a former-personality to push them over the top.

None of those coaches would be interested in building a team from scratch. If Cowher or Gruden or Dungy wanted to come back to the league, they would do it to add to their championship collections, not take a chance on reshaping a franchise over the next five years.

On top of that, there is very little precedent for a coach coming out of retirement and succeeding with a new team. Parcells has tried on multiple occasions and, while he was successful in changing the philosophies of franchises like the Jets and Dolphins(***), has never lasted long enough to see it through. George Siefert tried in Carolina and failed. Dan Synder wiped the cobwebs and NASCAR logos off of Joe Gibbs a few years back and we all know how that ended.

(***)Not so much the Cowboys.

Dick Vermeil is the only coach we can recall who retired and came back to take the St. Louis Rams from laughingstock to champions… And that had a lot to do with Mike Martz’s “Greatest Show on Turf” Offense.

So, would we like to see a past-his-prime, once-great football mind to come in and lead our team? No thank you. Sorry Gruden Fans and lovers of the Chin, we’ll pass.

Next stop on the Eagles’ Magical Mystery Coaching Tour: Current NFL Coaches.

Andy’s Last Stand: Vick For Nick?

October 30, 2012

You know how we started counting down the final days of the Andy Reid-era? You know how we love having our opinions confirmed by smart football people?

Well, then you should absolutely read (oft-recommended) Bill Barnwell – of Grantland.com – and his recent take on Andy’s remaining days in Philadelphia. Barnwell’s piece “Winter Is Coming To Philly,” runs back many of the Eagles’ issues – issues that we have been documenting for weeks years – and why it’s time for The Walrus to finally dive back into that salty sea water from whence we came.

The Juan Castillo disaster, Nnamdi Toastmugha and the secondary that scares absolutely no one, the Michael Vick problem, the lack of line play on both sides of the ball, the undisciplined sloppiness and stupidity… We’re not the only ones picking at The Walrus’ blemishes. These are MAJOR, glaring issues that cannot be easily fixed, and shouldn’t be fixed by the current regime. The Philadelphia Eagles need a complete and total overhaul… From personnel to coaching to philosophy and attitude.

And Barnwell hits on the most important point of all… After jettisoning Castillo and placing all of the Defensive blame on his former Offensive Line Coach, Andy has only ONE more card to play. Benching Vick for rookie Nick Foles. It’s his last and final move before the entire house of cards collapses on him.

Yesterday, reports started surfacing that the move was made(*). But multiple conflicting reports, as well as (egregious) soundbites from players(**), have made it apparent that Vickhead is still the Eagles Quarterback. So, there’s that.

(*)But of course, those reports came from Eagles’ “sideline reporter”/Walrus-lapdog Howard “Burger King” Eskin. So… Take THAT with the smallest grain of salt.

(**)Look, we realize DeSean is going to stick up for his QB, but saying that Vick is still elite? Really?! Come on DeSean… You’re definitely somewhat maybe smarter than that.

We’re conflicted. On one hand, we can’t stand the thought of having to watch Vick run around like a chicken with its head off while launching insane, unfathomable passes and taking hit after hit after hit.

But on the other hand… Nick Foles is a lose/lose/lose situation for Eagles fans. Either he’s really bad and we’re right back to where we started with Vick(***); he’s an inconsistent mess-of-a-rookie QB with flashes of ability, which means we’ll have to suffer through a year-and-a-half of a mediocre signal-caller who will, at best, be a journeyman QB; or he’s really good, takes the Eagles on a run to the playoffs and convinces Lurie to give Reid a two-year contract extension.

(***)Or Trent Edwards… Yikes.

We’re TERRIFIED of that last scenario! But, we’re pretty confident that Foles is destined to be a career-backup Quarterback, who’ll bounce around the league for the next decade.

So, where does that leave the Eagles right now? With Vick. Until its not.

If the Eagles fall to New Orleans for their fourth straight loss, and Vick can’t take advantage of the (currently) single-worst Defense in the NFL… You better believe we will see Nick Foles under center.

And when that time comes, we’ll be holding our breath.

The Day After: Hurricane Andy

October 29, 2012

Yesterday, after the Eagles embarrassed the city of Philadelphia(*), we took (extremely warranted) shots at the Defense(**). Today, it’s the equally abysmal Offense’s turn.

(*)Though, thankfully not on national television. That’ll come next week, on Monday night in New Orleans…

(**)We failed to bring up one important thing during yesterday’s rant about the Defense… Third downs. The Falcons converted 7 of 13 third downs, with the majority of them coming in the first half, when the Eagles Defense thought they were still in pregame warmups.

The Birds’ Offense came out of the bye week the same way they went into it: sloppy, incohesive and poorly-coached, with absolutely zero urgency. They even started the game the same way they’ve begun the first six games of this season: with a three-and-out. Incompletion, run for no gain, sack, punt. Same as it was in weeks one through six. The Offense didn’t run its fifth play of the game until the second quarter. Hell… They were still running their first 15 scripted plays in the second half!

There’s only one word to describe yesterday’s performance: Pathetic.

Vick may not have turned the ball over, but he certainly tried hard… Passing balls directly to Falcons players, taking bad sacks, not protecting the ball, diving instead of sliding. The NFL season is about to enter week 9, yet Michael Vick seems stuck in week 3 of the preseason.

Meanwhile – and, of course, yet again – Andy totally forgot to utilize his best (if not only) Offensive threat, LeSean McCoy. It’s almost criminal at this point, the way he refuses to give Shady touches.

There was a particular three play stretch that started with the last play of the first quarter, where number 25 wasn’t even on the field… For three straight plays!!! He wasn’t injured. He wasn’t fatigued. Before each play, you could see him start running out onto the field before Mornhinweg would hold him back on the sideline. How the fuck does that make sense?!

Again – and we honestly can’t stress this enough – Shady is, by far, the best player on this team. A shitty team at that. He may be the most talented Eagles’ Running Back of our lifetime… Yet, we’ll never truly know what he’s capable of, because he’s only getting 15 touches a game. Elite Running Backs typically carry the ball 20-30 times per game. Shady consistently gets 12 carries or less! And the Offense OBVIOUSLY suffers because of it…

If the Offense was running through McCoy – like it should be – Michael Vick wouldn’t have so much pressure on him, both literally and figuratively. Vick would have more time to throw, because Defenses would be kept honest. Instead, they simply pin their ears back and run Vick all over the field. Giving Shady the ball, would force opposing pass rushers to stay home and protect against the run. But no, Andy would much rather see his overwhelmed QB run around, take nasty, unnecessary hits and throw balls into the dirt, into the bleachers or into the arms of opposing players.

And what do we say about an Offensive Line that can’t do the job they’re paid millions of dollars to perform? This unit might be the worst on the team(***). For all of Vick’s horrendous decision-making and the Offense’s ineptitude, it all starts with the O-Line… And they are flatout terrible.

(***)And that’s really saying a lot.

Sure, there are injuries – All-Pro Jason Peters was lost for the year in the offseason and losing Center Jason Kelce was a killer – but, for what it’s worth, Andy Reid has never had an issue with plugging in backup linemen and making it work. That’s actually always been one of his strengths.

So what’s the excuse now? Yeah, backups Dallas Reynolds and Dennis Kelly couldn’t start in a semi-pro league, but it’s Todd Herremans, the line’s elder statesman and only viable asset, who’s been particularly putrid. Yesterday may have been his worst game as a pro. Bad holding and false start penalties, sacks, missed assignments, poor footwork. The Falcons pass rushers had no problem getting past Herremans all day. He almost seemed aloof… Like he just didn’t care.

Todd’s the guy that Andy should be relying on to hold down the fort and keep that line together until everyone is healthy. He needs to be the leader, the one that steps up and gets that unit out of the doldrums. But he’s failing. Miserably.

Herremans has turned into a perfect microcosm for the Eagles’ Offense… He has a super high level of talent and skill, yet he’s way too sloppy, too careless and just simply doesn’t seem to give a shit if he saves Andy Reid’s job or not.

And that’s really what it comes down to this week… Andy Reid’s job.

His players don’t seem to care that he’s on the chopping block, which is very telling. Last year, they quit on him in Seattle and we claimed it was the end for him, yet he somehow won them back and kept plugging away. But after news that he gave them a pregame, closed-door talking-to yesterday, which they CLEARLY didn’t respond to… That’s a team that has quit on its coach. Plain and simple.

Is there any chance The Walrus can pull another miracle out of his considerably large ass and turn this around? Perhaps. Is it worth it? No.

This Eagles team sucks and they’re only getting worse. And we don’t just mean this season… The Andy Reid-era Eagles have not been legitimately good since the 2007 playoff run, and even that team overachieved. So why try to salvage what’s left? They’re not capable of winning a championship this year. They may not even be good enough to be 8-8!

But, for once, that’s fine. It doesn’t matter anymore. The only thing that we care about is that there are only nine more weeks left until this affront to football is over. Our favorite team will no longer be held hostage by a sea-dwelling mammal.

Nine more weeks to Fire The Walrus. We can make it!

NOT-SO BREAKING NEWS: Eagles Defense Takes A Bowles Movement

October 28, 2012

Somewhere today, Juan Castillo was in front of his television, watching the Eagles-Falcons game and laughing his ass off. And rightfully so…

The Todd Bowles-led Eagles Defense, provided fans with the single worst performance we’ve seen since Seattle came in to the Linc on a snowy Monday night in 2005 and gave our team a 42-0 whupping. Missed tackles, blown assignments, stupid penalties, overpaid-CBs being burnt by underpaid-WRs… The Defense today was either simply pathetic or somehow possessed by the visiting Asante Samuel. Either way, it was a train wreck. But hey… At least they got their first sack since week 2!

Nnamdi Toastumgha should be benched for the remainder of his ridiculous contract. Kurt Coleman and Nate Allen should be traded for a bag of balls and a kicking tee, respectively. The Defensive Line should never play football again. Somehow, the Linebackers are the best unit on the D. Somehow, this Defense has gotten even worse.

Did anybody in the entire universe believe that the Defense would regress AFTER firing Juan Castillo?! It’s almost ludicrous how bad they were.

And we haven’t even gotten to the worst, most pathetic part of this Eagles team yet… No, not the Offense – which we will be getting to either later tonight or tomorrow – but, Andy Walrus Reid.

We can talk about the playcalling. We can talk about the punt on 4th-and-less-than-a-yard while down 17. We can talk about the insanely shitty scripted plays that Andy had planned for two weeks. But, guess what guys? This is it. The end is here. He can’t fire Juan again(*) and he’s running out of scapegoats(**). Ladies and gentlemen… We officially have nine weeks left in the Andy Reid-era!

(*)Though, as we pointed out to others in our section at the game, he DOES still have another Offensive Line Coach to fire!

(**)Though Michael Vick WILL be the next to lose his job.

As the rain and “Fire Andy” chants poured down around him, Andy Reid HAD to come to the realization that his time as the Head Coach of the Eagles is no longer his. Did you know that he gave the team a passionate, Tony D’Amato-esque pregame speech? Well, his words and leadership affected his guys SO much that they came out and took a big, steaming dump on the field for him. Did you see his postgame press conference? He’s a broken man. He’s angry and irritable and no longer has a perfect post-bye week record. He’s a guy that knows his time is up.

Finally.

The Eagles are a VERY poorly coached team, all around, and just a poor team in general. They have no Offensive Line, an awful Quarterback(***), no sense of playcalling or execution, zero discipline and seemingly no interest in winning football games.

(***)If Vick were a pitbull, wouldn’t he have put himself down by now?

The players and coaches appear to know it. The fans DEFINITELY know it. In nine weeks, The Billionaire BETTER know it.

Nine more weeks… And Lurie will Fire The Walrus.

We have so many more thoughts on this latest disaster and a lot planned for this week, so make sure you check back often!

Reason #1,976 to Fire The Walrus

October 18, 2012

The Eagles Have Been A .500 Team Longer Than You Realize

During the week 8 bye of the 2010 season, Andy Reid officially handed Michael Vick the keys to the franchise. Vick had been splitting time with then-“Franchise QB” Kevin Kolb, but Kolb’s injuries and ineffectiveness opened the door for Vick to take the reigns. Since that time, the Eagles have played exactly 32 games (including the 2010 playoff game against the Packers) or the equivalent of two full seasons.

In those 32 games, the team has gone 17-15. If you take away the first two games, both wins, the Birds are 15-15 over the past 30 games. They are the epitome of a .500 team. Perfectly mediocre!

Yet, has The Walrus done ANYTHING to help morph the Eagles from a categorically average team to a winner again? No! He has been running out the exact same players (save for a worse Offense Line), gameplan, scheme and failed execution on Offense since this disaster began. Hell, he hasn’t made a change to his Offensive philosophy since he took over in 1999(*). And that’s before we even get into the yearly clusterfuck that has become the Eagles Defense. But yeah… Lurie should keep paying him millions to continue this charade.

(*)Which is another “Reason to Fire The Walrus” entirely.

Look, teams that perpetually go 8-8 are mired in mediocrity, and the Eagles are no different. .500 teams don’t have an open championship window… They need to tear up the foundation and rebuild. It’d be one thing if this franchise was on the upswing – improving to 8-8, rather than residing there(**) – but in reality, the Eagles haven’t had a legitimate shot at a Super Bowl appearance since losing to the Cardinals in the 2008 NFC Championship Game(***). That’s why it’s time for a change four years ago now.

(**)In a league where parity truly is king, maintaining a .500 record for multiple seasons is a rather remarkable feat!

(***)The loss that should have been the bookend to the Andy Reid-era.

Again, there is no “window of opportunity” with this current Eagles team, as Andy Reid’s Eagles have been stuck in “rebuilding mode” for far too long… Even if they refuse to admit it. And it’s a complete shame, because this team features possibly the best Running Back in team history – and Barry Sanders 2.0(****) – and the team’s best Wide Receiving corps in our lifetime. But the Eagles have no Quarterback, no Offensive Line and – besides DeMeco Ryans – very little Defense. They are what they are: a middling football team.

(****)Shady is officially the ONLY player to ever be deemed Barry Sanders 2.0, now that Barry Sanders himself gave his blessing!

Unfortunately, that’s what they’ve been for the last two-plus years. But, maybe there is a small sliver of hope…

Today, Reuben Frank unleashed 25 random (mostly) Eagles facts, and the first two should make us all feel slightly better:

1. The Eagles are 3-3. The last three times they were 3-3, they went to the NFC Championship Game (2001, 2003, 2008). The last eight times they were 3-3, they went to the playoffs seven times and went 10-6 the one year they didn’t. The last time they started out 3-3 and didn’t finish over .500 was 1967. So … ya never know, right?

2. Here’s more: In 14 years under Reid, the Eagles are right at .500 before the bye (45-45) but 45 games over .500 after the bye (84-39-1, .681).

So, there’s that!

And while it’s nice to have a Walrus whisker crumb-amount of hope, this team is missing two major components from those 2001, 2003 and 2008 teams: Jim Johnson and Brian Dawkins. Not-so coincidentally, the Eagles have not won a playoff game since losing those two, following the 2008 season – Dawkins to free agency, JJ very sadly to his battle with melanoma.

In fact, the entire Andy Reid-regime has been on a sharp, downward spiral since losing their Defensive Head and Heart. Which just goes to show: the Philadelphia Eagles were never Andy Reid’s team… They were JJ’s.

Without a Defensive genius and one of the greatest Safeties in NFL history, Andy Reid has proven what he has been all along: an above-average Quarterbacks Coach/shitty Offensive Coordinator. Which is exactly why the Philadelphia Eagles are a .500 team.

And exactly why The Billionaire must Fire The Walrus.

Whisker Wednesday Poll: Scapegoat 2.0

October 17, 2012

Now that Juan Cantcoachstillo is gone and left to his own devices – like sending love letters to his beloved Walrus – there must be an heir to the scapegoat throne.

Michael Vick seems like the obvious choice, but it’s very likely that Reid is stuck to ride him out for the remainder of the year. Marty Mornhinweg could certainly receive the blame for the Offense’s horrendous play and penchant for turnovers, but then the playcalling/performance falls solely on Andy’s cushion-y shoulders, and we all know he won’t put himself in the line of fire.

On Twitter this morning, we pontificated that Bobby April will be the next to get the axe, and that actually makes some sense, considering the Eagles’ Special Teams unit has been putrid the last two years. Currently, the Birds rank 25th overall in kick returns, averaging just 20.8 per return, and 30th in punt returns… with only 5.5 per return! And while the Eagles Offense averages one of the worst starting field positions in the league, the Special Teams have given up the fifth most kick return yards, the MOST punt returns (22) and the MOST punt return yards (272) in the NFL. The Eagles’ Special Teams are just that… Special.

So, you can obviously tell who we think should join Juan as an ex-Eagle(*), but we want to hear from you… Who is Andy Reid’s next scapegoat? Let us know what you think!

(*)You know, besides The Walrus.

Whisker Wednesday: Juan More Time

October 17, 2012

We’re still on wide cloud nine!

No, not because a good man in Juan Castillo lost his job… But because we’ve finally arrived at the beginning of the end for The Walrus. Firing Juan was the first wave of the white flag for Andy, a move drenched in desperation and panic(*).

(*)But it hasn’t deterred Juan. He still loves Andy and would take a bullet for him! Awwww… Queue “The Bodyguard” soundtrack!

Now, we’ve waxed poetic plenty about the mistake that was “Juan the Defensive Coordinator,” and now that the team has finally moved on, so can we… But not until you read today’s Daily News piece by Paul Domowitch, where he absolutely lambastes Andy and unearths the fact that The Billionaire was skeptical of the move from the jump. Domo takes it to Andy for his lack of loyalty, severe allergy to hiring Defensive Coordinators and the selfishness required to fire Juan in order to save his own job.

And Domo hits on one other major theme that we’ve mentioned, oh, once or twice:

Some people might call what Reid did Tuesday decisive. He is owning up to yet another mistake he made and is correcting it.

I call it looking for a scapegoat.

Sound familiar? That’s what the whole 2012 season has become for The Walrus… Who can he blame for his failures? Whose employment is less important than his? Who will fall on the grenade, so that bits of walrus don’t go flying over everyone else? Who’s next?

Andy Reid will do whatever it takes to keep his job… A job he wholeheartedly hasn’t deserved since 2007.

Now the Defense rests in the (very capable) hands of Todd Bowles, who claimed yesterday that he will be sticking with Jim Washburn’s Gaping Hole Defense Wide-9 Defense(**). So, when that inevitably fails, at least Andy can fire Washburn and say it was his fault.

(**)Bowles also claimed that Andy told him he was going with his gut… Andy’s gut also told him to eat that old egg salad sandwich and buy Facebook stock, so…

Or, Andy can bench Vick for the zero-experience, raw project that is Nick Foles. Look, we know a lot of you are calling for Nick Foles to take the reigns of this Offense(***)… but there are major consequences if that happens.

(***)Why? We have no idea. He was OK in the preseason… But he’s NOT the next Joe Montana.

If Foles is good and takes this team deep into the playoffs (highly unlikely), he buys Andy Reid two-to-three more years in Philadelphia. If Foles is bad, and Trent Edwards remains Trent Edwards, Vick is the ONLY option on the roster and the team will be forced to pay him his guaranteed bonus three days after the Super Bowl, rather then jettison him after the season like they should.

Nick Foles is a double-edged sword for Eagles fans. At this point, we’re better off having the team play out the season as is, finish somewhere between 7-9 and 9-7, and finally end this 15-year clusterfuck of insanity.

This team is CLEARLY NOT winning a Super Bowl this season. The only hope we have is the end of The Walrus’ reign, the end of our misery and the end of our football team’s perpetual mediocrity.

Yesterday was the first step in the right direction. The first step to firing The Walrus!

The Walrus’ (Extra-Support) Seat Is Officially Hot

The firing of Juan Castillo was just the first domino to fall.

Surely, there are more to come… Will Vick be replaced by rookie Nick Foles? Will Offensive Coordinator Marty Mornhinweg finally be ousted? Will Andy hire a 12-year old Madden expert to handle the playcalling?

Anything’s possible… For this is uncharted territory for Andy Reid.

In his 14 years as Head Coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, Reid had never had his seat feel this warm. At no point, had owner Jeffrey Lurie given Reid an ultimatum to “win or else,” but that has finally changed this year. Andy is charged with improving this team and finishing better than 8-8. It’s not likely. And now, at 3-3 and with only 10 games left to prove his worth, Andy Reid is desperate.

It’s finally happening, Fire The Walrus Nation. We may finally get our long desired dream come true!

But back to the news at hand… From the moment Andy hired Todd Bowles to coach the Secondary, we knew this move would eventually come. Bowles was a Head Coaching candidate during the offseason and, unlike the now-gone Juan, he is more-than-qualified to man an entire Defensive unit. So, Andy purposely put this failsafe in place, knowing he had a mid-season scapegoat in Castillo, if needed.

Well, naturally, he needed him. And it’s a good thing he premeditated all this instead of, you know, hiring a real Defensive Coordinator like Todd Bowles in the offseason. Buddy forbid Andy would do anything right the first second time. And let’s not forget… Juan should NEVER have been given the job to begin with!

Again… It’s his arrogance that sets Andy Reid apart from everyone else and makes him the complete bane of our existence.

So, we’re one day into the bye week and already the Eagles have been shaken up. Something else will follow soon. Andy will do anything he can to right this ship and save his job.

Clearly, The Walrus isn’t a fan of the rising temperature in his water tank.

Still more to come later today…
